USDJPY is a ticking time bomb waiting for the right fundamental spark.

The pair has not traded at current levels since February 2026. Just six weeks ago, the yen sat at a 40-year low. Today, it’s at a seven-month high.

A super central bank combo featuring the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan may shape the USDJPY’s outlook for the rest of 2026.

Here are 3 key forces that could rock USDJPY:

Fed decision: A few weeks ago, a September hike looked unlikely. Then Warsh turned hawkish at Jackson Hole, a blowout NFP report landed and Brent surpassed $100 a barrel. Markets are currently pricing a near 70% chance of a September hike. If this becomes reality, the dollar could receive a solid boost – propelling USDJPY higher as a result.

BoJ decision: The BoJ is set to raise interest rates to their highest level since 1995. The central bank was already leaning toward a hike, then Scott Bessent got involved – stating he expects Ueda to “do the right thing”. Beyond September, markets see a 25% chance of another hike by October. A rate hike may support the Yen, weighing on the USDJPY.

Technical forces: USDJPY is under pressure on the daily charts with key levels of interest at 155.80, 154.50 and 153.00. Bloomberg’s FX model shows a 73.2% chance that the USDJPY trades between 151.62 – 156.87 over the next one-week period.

    Frequently asked questions

A blowout jobs report, Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole tone, and oil breaking above $100 all pushed hike odds sharply higher in weeks.

US Treasury Secretary Bessent has publicly pushed Governor Ueda to "do the right thing" on rates, adding political weight to an already-live hike debate.

A Fed hike and BOJ hike pull the pair in opposite directions — the real risk is a violent move if either surprises the market's pricing.
