Week Ahead: EURUSD braced for two-sided catalyst

    4th September

    Key takeaways

    1. The ECB rate decision, US PPI and US CPI all land within a two-day window.

    2. Another ECB hike is largely priced in, meaning the real market reaction may depend more on inflation data.

    3. Hotter or cooler-than-expected US inflation could rapidly reshape Fed expectations.

    Meet the analyst

The world's most-traded FX pair is bracing for a potentially explosive week.

Two inflation reports and one central bank decision, all packed into a 48-hour window.

On Thursday, the ECB's rate decision and US PPI land within the same hour. The US CPI follows immediately on Friday.

Everyone expects an ECB hike. The bigger question is whether two US inflation reports validate or shatter expectations for the Fed to act this month.

That's usually the recipe for a quiet week - everyone already knows what's coming.

Except those two US inflation prints could either validate the market's assumptions or blow them apart.

Before we take a deep dive on what to expect, here is a list of key events in the week ahead:

    Sunday, 6th September

    • OIL: OPEC+ ministers meet to set oil production targets

    Monday, 7th September

    • US Labor Day holiday, with markets closed
    • EUR: Eurozone GDP
    • GER40: Germany industrial production
    • CHF: Sweden CPI

    Tuesday, 8th September

    • AUD: Australia Westpac consumer confidence
    • CNY: China trade
    • JPY: Japan labour earnings, GDP, current account balance
    • TWN: Taiwan CPI

    Wednesday, 9th September

    • CNY: China PPI, CPI
    • TWN: Taiwan trade

    Thursday, 10th September

    • EUR: Eurozone ECB rate decision
    • GER40: Germany CPI
    • USD: US PPI, initial jobless claims

    Friday, 11th September

    • JPY: Japan PPI
    • NZD: New Zealand BusinessNZ manufacturing PMI
    • GBP: UK industrial production, trade balance
    • USD: US CPI, University of Michigan consumer sentiment

Here are 3 key themes that could rock EURUSD:

    1) ECB decision

Eurozone inflation jumped to 3.3% in August, up from 2.9% in July. Comfortably above target and enough to keep a hike almost fully priced in September.

But core cooled to 2.4% over the same stretch. Lagarde can point to one number to justify hiking, or the other to justify caution for the rest of 2026. Same data set, two arguments. Much attention will be paid to the updated staff economic projections which may show higher inflation, particularly in 2027.

    • Hawkish hike + hawkish tone = euro strength, EURUSD tests the top of its range.
    • Hike, but a cautious tone = the pop fades before lunch.

    2) US inflation combo

US PPI lands around the same time as the ECB decision, so the dollar may move before Lagarde's even finished talking.

Then Friday brings the big one. US CPI, the last major data point before the Fed’s September 16 meeting.

Hike odds already sit above 50% after Warsh's Jackson Hole tone. A hot combo will not only support the dollar but reinforce the case for a hike the Fed hasn’t delivered in years.

    • Hot PPI + hot CPI = hike bets firm, dollar strengthens, EURUSD pressured.
    • Cool PPI + cool CPI = hike bets ease, dollar softens, EURUSD gets room to breathe.

    3) Technical forces

EURUSD is stuck between the 200-day and 100-day SMA.

Resistance can be found at 1.1640 and support around 1.1560. It feels like the major currency pair has spent the week waiting for Friday’s jobs data to set the tone.

    • Close above 1.1640 and bulls may target 1.1700 then 1.1790.
    • A break below 1.1560 may encourage a decline toward 1.1500 and 1.1440.

Bloomberg's FX model puts a 77.8% probability of EURUSD trading within the 1.1526 – 1.1733 range next week.

    Frequently asked questions

It faces a rare combination of a major central bank decision and two key US inflation reports within 48 hours.

Markets are heavily positioned for an ECB hike, leaving little room for policy surprises but plenty of room for inflation-driven moves.

A meaningful upside or downside surprise in US inflation that forces investors to reassess the Fed outlook.
